11 Jul Why We Build Our Greenhouses with Macrocarpa Timber 🌲
When it comes to growing healthy food, we believe your greenhouse should be just as clean and natural as your soil.
At Nutopia, we’ve worked with a lot of different timber types over the years. But we keep coming back to locally milled, untreated Macrocarpa — especially for projects where customers want a more eco-conscious, chemical-free option.
It looks and smells amazing, it’s sustainable, and it lasts. And for schools, wellness spaces, high-end gardens, and organic growers — it ticks all the boxes.
Here’s a breakdown of why we (and some of our customers) still love Macrocarpa — and how we use it in our greenhouses.
🌱 1. Eco-Friendly – No Treatment Required
Macrocarpa is one of the most environmentally friendly timbers you can use in New Zealand. It contains natural oils that protect against rot and insects, meaning it doesn’t need chemical treatment.
That makes it ideal for growing food, raising seedlings, and creating a cleaner environment inside your greenhouse. It’s similar in durability to H3.1 treated pine — just without the toxins.
📍 2. Locally Milled in Hawke’s Bay and the Bay of Plenty
We source our Macrocarpa from a small-scale millers in northern Hawke’s Bay and the Bay of Plenty. The logs come from local farms.
It’s a simple, honest supply chain — and it keeps your build local, sustainable, and low-impact.
🛠️ 3. Built to Last – With Smart Timber Pairing
While Macrocarpa can last 10–15 years in ground contact, we take extra care by lining the bottom plates (where moisture is highest) with H4-treated pine. This acts as a barrier between the Macrocarpa and the soil, giving you a structure that’s natural where it matters — and protected where it counts.
Combine that with our polycarbonate cladding and you’ve got a dry, durable, low-maintenance space to grow in for years to come.
🎨 4. Colour & Texture That Ages Gracefully
Fresh Macrocarpa has a warm honey tone with visible grain and texture. When stained or oiled, it looks rich and earthy. Left raw, it naturally silvers over time — a look we personally love.
It brings a lot of life and character to a greenhouse, especially when paired with black trims or clear polycarbonate.
✂️ 5. Rough Sawn Timber – Raw and Reliable
We now use rough sawn Macrocarpa, which is just as strong as dressed 90x45mm timber. It offers great grip when framing and shows off the raw grain beautifully. We’ll give it a light sand if needed, but most of the time we leave it untouched — and it still looks sharp once installed.
It’s a more natural, low-waste approach to timber — one that aligns with our values and appeals to many of our clients.
💬 6. Not for Everyone – And That’s Okay
When we first started Nutopia, we built exclusively with untreated Macrocarpa, thinking most customers would want a chemical-free structure. But over time we’ve found that most people actually don’t mind treated pine — especially if it’s hidden behind cladding or polycarbonate.
Macrocarpa is more expensive, because it’s slower to mill, harder to source, and more time-consuming to work with. So now, we offer both options — and help each customer decide what works best for their project, their property, and their budget.
It’s still a favourite for schools, retreats, eco-builders, and design-conscious homeowners — but it’s not a must-have for everyone. That’s the beauty of what we offer: real options, honest advice, and no pressure.
