A 3-Metre-High Drive-Through Custom Greenhouse in Cambridge – Built for a Tractor

Neville’s Vision

Every custom greenhouse has a story — and Neville’s is a good one. He wanted a 3-metre-high drive-through Old Faithful so he could roll in with his tractor, dig, and shift soil without breaking a sweat.

Before we showed up, he’d already had builders cut into the side of a hill, put up two retaining walls, and carve out a track for the tractor. That prep work gave us a rock-solid base to work with — and made the whole thing feel like we were building into part of the landscape.

From Sketches to Build

After a few chats on the phone and some quick sketches emailed back and forth, we landed on a design that ticked all the boxes. Big custom double doors, hung on heavy-duty gate hinges, so they’d handle plenty of use.

The greenhouse sat 3 metres high on the tall side — that’s 600mm higher than a standard Old Faithful — so those retaining walls really came in handy. They weren’t perfectly straight, which meant a bit of packing here and there to keep the width consistent. That’s important, because if the walls are out, your roofline won’t be square.

Frosty Mornings & A New Trailer

Cambridge in winter is a whole different world compared to the coast. We’re used to maybe two or three frosts a year — there, it was every morning. We couldn’t get the trailer down the hill because it was too icy, so every bit of timber had to be carried down by hand.

And just to make it interesting, our old trailer died two days before we left. Bex found a perfect replacement — a tandem trailer built for hauling kitset sheds — and it just happened to be in Cambridge. So we grabbed it on the way, picked up the greenhouse kit from Mainfreight, and got to work.

The Details That Made It

Neville went for 6mm twin-wall polycarbonate cladding, with a gutter along the low side for rainwater. We added four automatic vents along the high side to keep things cool in summer, plus flashing for extra durability.

The extra height meant a lot more time up the ladder, which slowed things down a bit, but the end result was worth every step.

More Than Just a Greenhouse

Neville told us he’d received some very expensive quotes from other builders, but what stood out most to him was our communication throughout the process. He ended up with a strong, functional, and completely unique custom greenhouse that fit his needs perfectly — and he was happy with the price.

Every client has a different vision for their greenhouse. Whether it’s about growing food, creating a year-round space for plants, or building something that doubles as a workspace or storage area, a custom greenhouse can turn those ideas into reality.
